IAPP Privacy. Security. Risk. 2019 | As California Goes, So Goes the Nation? Navigating Emerging and Conflicting Laws

Gary Kibel, Davis+Gilbert Privacy + Data Security partner, will speak on a panel during a session titled “As California Goes, So Goes the Nation? Navigating Emerging and Conflicting Laws” at the IAPP Privacy. Security. Risk. 2019 in Denver on September 25.

Session Overview

California upended the U.S. data privacy regime in 2018 by passing the CCPA, a sweeping law similar to the GDPR. Other states have begun to follow suit, with New Jersey, Washington and New Mexico among the first to propose new legislation modeled on California. The various laws share common features but differ enough to create an uncertain regulatory environment and policy compliance challenges. Businesses across the United States are pausing and reevaluating their data collection practices, considering new compliance challenges and changing risk profiles. In a shifting legal landscape, privacy professionals must manage their programs with overlapping and diverging standards. At the same time, state regulators are ramping up their operations to prepare for enforcement. Our panelists will approach these issues from several different perspectives.

Topics include:

  • What state laws are enacted and pending besides CCPA
  • How to navigate conflicting state standards
  • Develop strategies for compliance
