Eight states have new privacy laws that further complicate the requirements consumer data companies must follow are taking effect in 2025. The new laws give consumers rights over their data, allowing them to know what information a company collects, the ability to request its deletion and now, consumers must be given a choice over whether their data can be sold or used for targeted advertising. Davis+Gilbert Privacy, Technology + Data Security partner Gary Kibel was quoted multiple times in a recent Bloomberg Government article discussing the new state data privacy laws in Delaware, Iowa, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Tennessee, Minnesota and Maryland.
Gary states that “Businesses are screaming for some uniformity here.” While these data privacy laws have similar concepts, each has their own nuances.
