The Hill | LSU’s Lane Kiffin Tests the NCAA’s Limits, Creating College Football Firestorm

LSU coach Lane Kiffin’s efforts to recruit players who declared for the NFL but did not make professional rosters, enabled by court rulings that challenged NCAA eligibility restrictions, have renewed questions about how athlete eligibility should be governed and where the NCAA’s authority begins and ends.

In The Hill article, “LSU’s Lane Kiffin Tests the NCAA’s Limits, Creating College Football Firestorm,” Davis+Gilbert Partner Jim Johnston commented on the broader implications of the controversy, noting that Kiffin’s actions may be a sign of what’s to come as coaches navigate eligibility rules and an increasingly competitive talent landscape.

“I don’t think he’s going to be the last coach to do this,” Jim shared. He added, “For players, coaches, scouts and everyone involved, the business of college sports is no longer in the back of their minds, it’s driving the decisionmaking.”

Jim’s comments highlight the ongoing evolution of college sports, where legal developments and shifting business realities continue to shape the landscape.
