Press Release - November 7, 2019

James L. Johnston Named a Sports and Entertainment Trailblazer by The National Law Journal

The National Law Journal has named Davis+Gilbert partner James L. Johnston in the publication’s inaugural list of Sports and Entertainment Trailblazers. The National Law Journal recognizes professionals who have made an impact in their sector through new types of strategies or innovative court cases.

The feature highlights Mr. Johnston’s legal career and achievements in helping non-traditional players stake their claims in sports and entertainment, such as advising Gillette, Walmart and Procter & Gamble in their entertainment initiatives.

The profile on Mr. Johnston references his work in seamlessly guiding clients across industries to leverage new technologies and means of connecting with audiences. Mr. Johnston discussed advising Drone Racing League to help them build out a model that took “advantage of the technology inherent in the competition itself” in order to form unique partnerships to finance, promote and broadcast sports programming around the world.

When looking ahead to what the future holds on the sports side, Mr. Johnston explains how gaming and gambling will alter how audiences engage with sports and how technological and experiential innovation will “blur the line between live and broadcast events.”
